Wow, Fall is upon us already and Cinders finds itself hurled into a challenging predicament. After more than 6 years at our present location on Havemeyer st. in Williamsburg, we are unfortunately being forced to move by a giant rent increase. The corner of Havemeyer and Hope has been a wonderful home to us for such a long time and we are really going to miss it. Lined with trees, its such a shady and quiet respite from the rest of the neighborhood. In the time since we have been here, we’ve seen a lot of different people move in all around us, all the while we have maintained what we set out to do: support artists we feel are important and under-represented, have great exhibitions, and create a space where rad, positive and productive people can meet one another. While buildings have been knocked down (displacing many of our friends in the process) to make way for new construction, we’ve luckily been able to continue on with our mission fairly unphased until now.
Ahhh, so this is gentrification come full circle, eh? We never thought we were immune but after so many years we had gotten really comfortable here so it was a bit of a shock when our landlord delivered us this ultimatum (the increase starts in January). But where do we go from here? We are definitely open to ideas…and we’d love to hear from all of you out there! Perhaps we can get a bigger space or have temporary spaces in different neighborhoods. As unsettling as all of this is, its also fairly exciting. In no way do we feel finished with this project so we are indeed phoenix rising again, looking to the future and all of its possibilities. We are also in the process of becoming a non-profit, so there are some definite changes for us in the forecast…but rest assured, our mission remains the same and it’ll take much more than a rent hike to hold us back!
